Hold us in quiet through the age long minute, while though art silent and the wind is shrill, Can the boat sink while thou art in it, can the heart faint, that waiteth on thy will?

Amy Carmichael — excerpt from Towards Jerusalem

Have you ever lived through an age long minute?  Do you find yourself seeking the Lord daily in prayer and His Word but He seems to be silent?  Are you in the midst of a storm and you are afraid that the boat may sink and all your hopes and dreams with it?

The truth is, we all go through age long minutes that seem like they will never end.  And the enemy of our souls would like us to think that God has forsaken us, that He has misplaced us or that He has neglected to care for us in this storm.  That is the first lie I am prone to believe anyway.  And if I believe the lie, then I am likely to try and take matters into my own hand.  The result is never God’s best for me.  Just my own version of  what I need.

The beginning of the poem quoted above says this:

Thou art the Lord who slept upon the pillow.  Thou art the Lord who calmed the furious sea, what matter beating wind and tossing billow if only we are in the boat with thee?

See, the disciples were in a boat with Jesus, too.  They were in a storm and Jesus was, quite frankly asleep.  They cried out, “Lord – don’t you care that we are dying?”  He awoke, and with an authority that only He has said, “Peace be still” – to the wind and the waves and immediately the storm was silent.  I think in that moment He was also telling the disciples that no matter what they ‘heard’ from Him that His presence alone speaks volumes.  I am here with you.  I will never forsake you.  I will never leave you.  Just being with me is enough.

I am so grateful to know that the boat will  not sink, because He is in it, too.

What you believe about God is the most important thing about you. – Tozer

As my prayer list grows to include things that are so much bigger than me, I am reminded that it is tough to be a grown up. I watch my kids move about their carefree lives and I am longing for a day of splashing in the pool and fort building myself. So last Saturday I sat with my Bible and took a good look at one verse that captured my heart. I found it in Deuteronomy 32:4.

He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. (New International Version)

I fell in love with this verse and researched it. Here are 11 things I found:

He is the rock – a foundation to be built on.
He is Immovable
He is a shelter for us
His works are perfect – nothing God does can be mended.
His works are complete – if He begins He will finish.
All His ways are just -right and propper
He is faithful and worthy of our trust
He is the One true God, Jehovah “El”
He does no wrong
He has never cheated anyone who has trusted Him
His justice was never so hard on those who cast themselves on His Mercy.
Upright – He will not wrong any by punishing more than they deserve or fail to recompense all those that serve Him and suffer for Him

And that is just one verse and 15 minutes of digging. Oh the treasures we can find when we take the time to look! What have you found recently in God’s Word that has captured your heart?

**I have also been reading A.W. Tozer’s Knowledge of the Holy. It is a fantastic book that lifts my heart and fixes my eyes on Jesus.
**When I study a passage, I love to use Blue Letter Bible. It is an online resource that you can use to look up the Greek Definitions for words, cross references for verses, as well as read commentaries. I also happen to love to read Matthew Henry’s commentary which can be found here as well.
***My above research is heavily influenced by these two great resources!

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Hebrews 13:8

He is the same.

He does not change.

The same God who flung the stars into place, has created a story just for you to shine in.

The same God who led His people out of slavery wants to set you free from the sin that easily entangles your life.

The same God who hung on a cross with His arms open wide invites you to fall into His embrace each and every day.

The same God, who powerfully defeated the enemy called death has everything in your life under control.

May your soul find rest in the fact that He does not change.  He does not improve on who He is.  He does not need to perfect Himself.  All that He is, He always has been, and evermore will be – He is for you.

She probably risked it all to be there.  Her presence alone made others uneasy.  She was not the sort of woman who they liked hanging around them.  But she had a purpose.  She was going to seize the moment. Nothing and no one could have stopped her from pouring the contents of her bottle on the feet of the Lord.  Once every drop was extracted, she mixed it with her tears and washed His feet.  The thing is, that little bottle caused an uproar.  “Wasted!” was the cry. “Why she could have sold it and given it to the poor. “ Others judged.  But He knew, that what was pouring out was really her heart, and He received it readily, taking it with Him to the cross.   By doing so, He set her free for the first time in her life.

It is a familiar story I know.   But have you ever heard a story with fresh ears?  When suddenly, where you are in your life intersects with the all too familiar and it is made new?  This happened to me the other day as this passage of scripture was once again lifted from Luke chapter 7.   This time, however, I learned something new. Did you know that it was customary for the host to have a bottle like this in his home to sprinkle on the feet of those who entered? It was a gesture to welcome guest into his home.  One bottle would have probably lasted at least a year.

But in this story Jesus Himself says that the host did not even give Him water to wash His feet when he entered. I’m guessing that no water, meant no perfume either.  So even the customary traditions had been forgotten this time.  Who knows why.  Maybe the host was too busy to be bothered with silly traditions.  Maybe he had more important things to do.

Purposeful.  Broken. Poured out.
Distracted. Negligent. Prideful.

One anointed the Lamb of God, and one missed the chance of a lifetime.

Father, my desire is to be pouring myself out, humbly every day.  I want to make the most of every moment.  And more than anything, I want to be faithful and part of a bigger plan.  I want to give you my all and see You turn around and make it beautiful.

Psalm 100

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.  Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing.  Know that the Lord Himself is God; It is He who has made us and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.  Enter His gates with thanksgiving, And His courts with praise.  Give thanks to Him, bless His name.  For the Lord is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting, and His faithfulness to all generations.

The first Scripture that was uttered in our country was filled with joyful adoration of our Lord and thanksgiving for all that He had done.  The band of weary Pilgrims had suffered much, but their hearts were bursting with thanksgiving.  As I peek at this passage of scripture I am struck by their choice.  They could have chosen any passage to claim their first night in a new land.  But this one, sprang from their hearts and lifted itself to the heavens.  Here is what I am reminded today as I read it:

  • Joy is the right response to all situations.
  • I am to serve Him gladly – in all things, even unknowns.
  • It is He who made me – He has all rights to my life.
  • He is Lord, God, and my Shepherd – my protecter, provider, my purpose for living.
  • He is worthy of my praise.
  • His goodness and faithfulness lasts forever – I can not out live it, out run it, out last it.
  • If I follow Him, He will lead me on the greatest adventure.

Oh how grateful I am for these brothers and sisters in Christ who in the face of great peril, chose gratitude.  Their vision and trust in my Shepherd has given birth to the life I live today.  May I be as faithful.  May my children hear gratitude coming from my lips in all situations.  And may God always be praised in this sweet land that we call home.

I was honored this past weekend to guest post for my friend Megan at The Tuckers Take Tennessee. After praying about what I could share, I felt led to continue my story and write about the legacy I want to leave my children. I hope you will join me there, and read about why I need a small group of women in my life. Also, please take the time to say hi to Megan and thank her for inviting me to share my heart!
