Fall Wreath :: My {un} Tutorial

Last Saturday, I felt the need to be creative and I whipped up a fall wreath for my front door. One thing you need to know about me, is that I am not a crafty girl.  In fact, whenever I am with other women who are crafty girls, I have craft envy.  So with that in mind, here is my Fall Wreath {un} tutorial.  I did not take any photos during the process.  It has been done far better in other places online. The truth is, my kids were running around like crazy people, and the camera would have been one more thing for me to manage.  Besides, I had hot glued fuzzy burlap to my fingers and I’m not sure I could have snapped a photo.

Anyway….this is the finished project:

And here is my {un} tutorial:

  1. Buy a straw wreath and leave it in your laundry room for 8 months.
  2. Find a piece of fall material, in this case burlap that you misplaced.
  3. Rejoice that you found the piece of burlap that had been misplaced!
  4. Locate fall ribbon.
  5. Fire up that glue gun!
  6. Threaten children with no lunch if they touch the fired up glue gun.
  7. While you are at it, remind the children to stop running in the house while you are crafting. Or ever.
  8. Cut burlap into long strips with tiny school type scissors that do not cut worth a thing.
  9. Be very frustrated at your tiny school type scissors for not cutting worth a thing.
  10. Save at least one strip of burlap to fashion a flower.
  11. Wish you had saved 2 strips of burlap to fashion 2 flowers.
  12. One strip at a time, wrap the straw wreath with burlap.
  13. Tell the kids to stop running.
  14. Use hot glue to secure the burlap strips.
  15. Burn your fingers repeatedly.
  16. Once wreath is wrapped, stand back and admire your creation.
  17. Using the extra strip of burlap you saved, knot the end and twist and turn to make it into a flower.
  18. Hot glue it at the end.  Burn your fingers again.
  19. Make another flower out of ribbon to add to your burlap flower.
  20. Hot glue flowers to the wreath.
  21. Hang with coordinating ribbon on your front door.
  22. Promise, to get more ribbon to make a 3rd flower.
  23. Realize you will probably forget to buy the ribbon, unless you are walking in the front door.

So there you have it.  I know you can do this.  {un} Crafty girls unite!

Simplify :: Everybody’s doing it.

Have you noticed that everywhere you look you are seeing the challenge to simplify? The truth is, a little peer pressure can be a good thing.   Like….

Tsh started this:

Who inspired Emily to lose stuff, gain perspective and dream…

a place for your soul to breathe

Amy is doing it too, and taking baby steps….

So, what am I doing? I am joining in on the 40 day challenge to remove 40 bags of stuff from my home during the 40 days of Lent.  I love the idea of purging, clearing, cleaning, and making my home ready.  I think this exercise is great for my girls too. It is a visual expression of how we can prepare our hearts for Easter.

I have given myself the freedom to tackle 40 Bags in 40 Days in my own way. I chose small bags, and did not want to limit myself to  one  bag per day.  For example, on day 4 I hauled out 8 bags of clothing and 2 bags of trash.   Some days I can’t tackle even one bag.   Our life is crazy, and the point of this challenge or any other is to move forward and simplify.  I love making it work for me and my family. Another thing I have learned is that pruning, cleaning, and purging is not a one time only event.  It must be a daily ritual.

Other lovelies, who always inspire me, also focusing on simplifying are Terilynne and the Nester.

So what about you?  Are you challenged to simplify  this season or spring clean?  Who has inspired you lately in this area?

Winter Home :: Time to Begin Again {To Do List}

I love that God gives us new days, new years, and new seasons to begin again. The above list is not exhaustive, but it is doable for me. I find that if I put too much on The List, I am overwhelmed and unable to accomplish anything.

And if  you are curious, here are the details:

1. 31 Days – download it, be committed, be the best I can be, here!

2.  40 Bags – saw this today, and all I can say is “Yes, we are in!”

3.  Cups, shoes & socks, snack basket & pantry overhaul.  These areas are stressing me out. I’m changing them so I can succeed and not yell like crazy at my people.

What about you?  What is on your fresh start To Do List this Winter?

P.S.  The winner of the “By Grace Alone Necklace” is Wendi!

Thanks to everyone who left a comment!  I loved reading your answers about Grace!  The next Grace Notes Post will be Tuesday!

Winter Home :: (part 2)

After the color of Christmas is stored for another year, my winter home feels like a black and white picture. Soft. Meaningful. And easy on the eyes. I’m letting this image inspire me by using vintage cameras and books as decor in my winter home. Last week, I shared some ideas that found online.  Today I’m sharing my own work in progress.

I’m still deciding what to do with my very white and boring front door.  I thought I would use a white wreath, but then realized that it would not show up.  Ideas? Links? Inspirations? Help!

Week 3 of Winter Home will be next Thursday. I’m thinking either Kitchen Goodness or  goodness me I need Organization.   Any thoughts?

Note: Still loving my Red Letter Word Art by Dee!  And, the inspiration for the jars came from Melisssa @theinspiredroom!  Everything else is from my own collection, the thrift store, or the Dollar store!

P.S.  No bragging about sunny and 70 degrees….tonight we have a freeze warning! Serves me right!

Winter Home :: {Inspirations}

Do you decorate your home for winter? During Christmas I truly enjoyed the touches of silver in my home.  I have decided to keep it around for the month of January.  I’m also using white and adding touches of green.  Here are some inspirations I found online to help me pull it all together:

Images clockwise from l to r:

{The Inspired Room , The Old Painted Cottage, and Ballard Designs.}

The Old Painted Cottage traditional living room
{I  love this collection of vintage cameras and books. It feels like winter for some reason.}

Coffee Filter Wreath by The Nester

{Maybe I’ll get my craft on and make one of these like The Nester.}

Next Thursday, I’ll share some of my own pictures. And, I’ll try not to brag that it is 70 degrees and sunny outside.  Yeah, that’s how we do January around here!

Making Scripture Visible In Your Home, Part 2

Last week, I shared with you a couple of ways to get Scripture Visible In Your Home by using what you had on hand.  Today, I am sharing some of my favorite online shops.

Jennifer from Studio JRU says“Faith is a big part of my life and my art. God has given me with this talent, blessed me with art in my life, so I want to use it in the best way I possibly can. I can’t even imagine doing anything else. I want each piece of art that I make to be meaningful, encouraging and inspiring. People may compliment my art but really it is God working through me…I merely hold the paint brush as He miraculously holds me through whatever may come in this life.” (Jennifer, of  Studio JRU)

This is one of my favorites from her shop!

Now, wouldn’t you love to hang a piece of her heart on your wall?  She is so gifted!

Red Letter Words:  Dee features bold art that uses God’s Word as  focal point.  I love that she got her start because of her daughter’s school art project, (read about it here).  My girls and I are studying the Fruit of the Spirit and I wish I had this one on the wall right now:

***Update: After this posted, Dee from Red Letter Words contacted me and sweetly offered to send me this awesome print.  I was overwhelmed by her generosity.  I now see this everyday and love the reminder of God’s Spirit within in me! Thanks Dee!

Dayspring: I love what this Christian company is producing,  especially their new Ever Grateful – 4 Piece Taupe Place SettingI think this would be a great way to feed your family with God’s Word as they feed their bodies. Some of these pieces would also work as wall art by using plate hangers. Just stop by @ The Nester for some great ideas on this!

As I was thinking about how much I {loved} Dayspring, they sent me sweet invitation to become an affiliate.  This simply means that I get to share with you some of my favorite things, and you get to take advantage of great sales!  If you choose to shop by clicking links here on my blog, my family will be blessed by a small compensation.

These are just a few of my favorite things that I will be putting on my wish list! Please be sure to visit these amazing artists and let them know how much you appreciate them!  And please share with me any other online resources you have for getting Scripture Visible In Your Home. Thanks so much!

***You can also find me at The MODsquad Blog today where I am writing about praying for our daughters.
