“Hey Mom, I’m Bored…”

Summer is coming. You can guarantee after the celebration from school being on break for a few days wears off, your kids will say this over and over:

“Hey Mom, I’m bored…”

At the Thacker house, when someone says “I’m bored,” I take this as a cue to give them a chore. They groan. I feel a small victory. Though it gets those nasty chores finished, it does not move me closer to “Mom of the Year” in their eyes. Sometimes, I’d take that over clean bathrooms.

Truth 1: I am not an outdoor mom

Truth 2: I am not a ‘fun’ mom.

Truth 3: This is why God gave us mommy friends who are.

Enter my friend Jen Murray.

(Jen and I at .dotMom this past September)

She is a mom of four, just like me. But, she  had them all at once and they are all boys. She has more than a few good ideas on how to have adventure this summer with your kid.  She is awesome and wrote it down in an ebook for moms like me who need a little love in that department:

Jen sent me a preview copy last week and I sent her my thoughts:

The cost of this ebook is only $4.99. So you are $4.99 away from having a great summer plan for the I’m bored days. You can get it at Amazon or through E-Junkie by clicking the link above the image. Both of these links are affiliate links for me, so if you click and buy I get a small compensation. In effort to fully disclose my intentions, you should know I will be using that compensation to buy zip line tools and make coffee can ice cream.

Thanks Jen. You are awesome.

P.S. Mama, He Just Flat Out Loves You

Hey there mama,

My heart longs to be able to help you figure out how to do 36 hours of work in 24. I want to tell you not to worry about the bully in your son’s 3rd grade class, but I know you will anyway. And I’m sorry, I haven’t figured out how to tell time to stand still for few moments so you can freeze the picture of your daughter dancing with her daddy. Nope, I got nothing there.

God is for you

I wish I had a magic formula to coax your baby to sleep through the night. While I’m wishing for miracles, I’d love to know how to get your kids and mine to eat their vegetables without a fight.  I also have more questions than solutions about why some kids play the prodigal and some kids don’t. This one in particular breaks me into pieces.

The truth is, I’m a mama just like you and I have questions, too. Most days I hold on to hope with both hands, like a prize fighter going down for the last count, and I cry out to Jesus for grace to make it 5 more minutes. The older I get the more I need Him. That is the honest truth.

Here is what I know for sure:

God is for us in the most amazing way. We need Him. We need His word and we need other mamas to speak encouragement to our hearts.

My sweet friends over at Raising Generations Today understand this and are planning a conference for mamas like us next Spring. This week, they are hosting a blog link up and even giving away a ticket to their Spring 2014 conference. Here is what they want you to know about their hearts:

Raising Generations Today is an annual conference designed to equip and inspire moms to reach the hearts of their children for the glory of God. Through providing valuable resources, inspirational speakers, practical teaching materials, and the connection of moms in every season of parenting, Raising Generations Today will offer hope to women so that they may embrace and thrive in their roles as moms.

I am thrilled to be part of the speaker team for this conference. Brooke and I will be speaking as a team, telling our story, and sharing Hope for all the weary mamas who come. Honestly, I wish it were happening tomorrow, because I need it in the worst way.

In the mean time you can enter the ticket giveaway below, meet some other moms,  and know this is my prayer for you and for me:

May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace in your faith, that by the power of the Holy Spirit, your whole life and outlook may be radiant with hope.

Romans 15:13

P.S. Mama, He just flat out loves you.

Hey God-Sized Dream Girl…You Were Made for Joy

bigtree5

We had a busy week. We drove back and forth and back and forth some more. They were good sports about it, but it was wearing on us all.

We drove by the tree at least ten times while we were busy, driving back and forth. “Can we stop and play on the tree?” they asked. My initial response was “No, I’m sorry girls, there isn’t time today.” But then I thought better about it. “If we can get through this week, we’ll stop on Saturday.”  They took that promise to heart and made big plans.

Saturday came and it was glorious. The weather—perfect. As we made our way to the tree ,we noticed that it was dressed in pink. It was for a wedding someone told us. The girls imagined it was for them, and of course we knew secretly it was.

bigtree1

The big tree did not disappoint. We climbed as high as we could on her 300 year old branches. We marveled. Joy bubbled up. Sometimes gravity got the best of us when a hand was not close by. It didn’t matter. We made plans to return with the rest of our girl tribe and daddy of course. We celebrated with cherry Icees for all.

bigtree2

Did I mention this busy week was also a hard week? I didn’t chase after my God-sized dream much at all. Busy has a way of shoving everything else out of its way. In fact, I had more than a few moments where I wondered how in this crazy world I was going to get through another moment. But, by grace I did.

It’s inescapable: we will go through hard times but we are made to dwell in joy. - Holley Gerth

Hard times look different for each of us. For this weary mom, it can be life rising up and overwhelming my heart. I feel the pressure to be amazing when in fact, most of the time I’m not. Can I tell you a secret? This moment with my girls and the tree all dressed in pink, I almost missed it. I nearly drove by it again with apologies to my cuties. I was stuck in the hard times of the week with little vision to find my way out.

But we were made to dwell in joy.
To climb trees.
Pretend we are fairies (or pirates).
Sing songs and sneak drinks of your baby girl’s cherry Icee when she isn’t looking.

And surprise, surprise, guess who our hearts find in the joy dwelling place?

Splendor and majesty are before him, strength and joy are his dwelling place. 1 Chronicles 16:27

As it turns out, the author of my God-sized dream, He climbs trees, too.

xo,

Stacey

100 Million Reasons to Celebrate with Samaritan’s Purse

OCC-5Image provided by Samaritan’s Purse

100 Million reasons.

100 Million Shoeboxes packed.

100 Millions smiles of children receiving gifts.

100 Million presentations of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Certainly, this is a reason to celebrate!

Samaritan’s purse has gathered and distributed 100 million shoeboxes to children all over the world since 1993. To mark this milestone, they are hosting an extraordinary event in Orlando, Florida. Joining them will be special guests who have seen first hand how one shoe box—let alone 100 million can change a life!

Watch this:

Our family has packed shoe boxes for years. I think it is one of the simplest ways to involve your children in evangelism and discipleship. They love choosing the small items to send to a child in need. They can see and touch with their own eyes a gift that will literally travel the globe for Jesus. I am grateful to Samaritan’s purse for inspiring my own kids.

I am excited to part of this amazing event and I have a fun surprise for you! If you live in and around the Central Florida area, I have 2 tickets for the event to give away! All you need to do is leave a comment to be eligible to win. If you share this on Facebook or Twitter, you can leave an extra comment. I will announce the winner next week! {Giveaway is now closed}

Let’s celebrate 100 million shoe boxes and dream of how God will use the next 100 million for His glory!

What a Mama Needs

We mamas are crazy busy and we tend to run from need to need and forget that deep down we need a few things, too. Sometimes, it takes hopping on a plane and flying across the country to remember who we are and what feeds are souls.

  • A mama needs to go.

She needs to remember that before she was a mama she was a girl who could carry on adult conversations and eat an entire meal without being interrupted. Guilt will try to keep her from remembering and fear will tell her she’d be better off staying. But unless she finds bread for herself, she will not have anything left to give others. And truth be told, they will thank her for going in the end.

  • A mama needs to laugh.

She needs to laugh long and loud and not apologize for it.  She may need to laugh about being a mother or something funny her kids said. But is perfectly okay to laugh at hilarious lines from a Will Ferrel movie too.  Laughing lets go of the stress and frees her up to receive.

  • A mama needs to dream.

A mama who dreams will raise babies who dream. She needs to realize that her dreams matter to God, because they started with Him. If she gives them to Him and listens real close, He’ll give them wings.

  • A mama needs friends who cheer her on.

She needs to be able to kick her shoes off and talk long with a sweet sister over pizza and swap stories. A mama’s heart grows 10x’s bigger when another mama looks at her and says, “I believe in what God is doing here.”

Me with Terilynne

  • A mama needs to worship.

She needs to be reminded that God is bigger and deeper than anything four kids can dish out. She needs to raise her hands and release her smallness into the arms of a graceful Father who loves to love her through song.

  • A mama needs a challenging word.

The mission we call motherhood is not for the faint of heart and the only thing that will get us through is the Word made flesh Himself. His Words bring courage. His Words also shed light on the dark places. And a challenge well spoken will rally us to the frontline willingly.

  • A mama needs to return.

She needs to hear her children squeal with delight when she exits the taxi and feel the warmth of their breath on her neck as they squeeze her so tight she can’t breathe. She also needs to realize that they survived without her for a few days, and as good as it is to be home, it was certainly okay to leave.

:::

Special thanks to Lifeway and B&H Publishers for helping to make this past weekend possible.  They loved on this mama and a thousand more with grace and sweet southern charm. It was exactly what I needed.

:::

I pray you have a weekend filled with exactly what you need. I’m praying your heart is refreshed and fed.

xoxo,

Stacey
