What is a Grace Story?

“Grace  is the vehicle God uses on occasion to ensure that we get precisely

what we don’t deserve”.

Andy Stanely, The Grace of God

“In fact, your soul tells the most moving story of all.  Go tell your story, the world needs it.”

Annette Simmons, The Story Factor

Have I mentioned, in the past month, that my One Word for 2011 is Grace?Only about 750 times,” You say? {smiling} I’m finding that the more I dive into it, the bigger it is. Does that make sense?  Like when you eat the first bite of Oreo Cheescake, and you think, “Can it get any better?”  Yes, the second bite is even better. Don’t get me started on the crust.  Grace for me is like that. It keeps getting better!

I love hearing from other women. And since Grace is my theme this year, I had the idea to invite a few to share their Story.  So tomorrow, the first Grace Story will be here, by this amazing lady:

Me & Holley Gerth , @Relevant 10

{Yeah, I’m more than a little bit excited!}

So, I’ll see you back here, tomorrow?

Grace Notes :: The Grace of God (part 1)

The story of grace includes a broad range of characters — rich, poor, powerful, and powerless. For all of them, it is God’s grace that tips the scale in their favor. — Andy Stanley, The Grace of God

Who doesn’t appreciate a good story? I love that the Bible is jam packed with stories of people like you and me.  All of them, in one way or another came face to face with Grace. {remember, story is a pull strategy?} In his book, The Grace of God, Andy Stanley uses the art of story telling to tell the story of Grace.  Today, from chapters 1-4, I’m going to focus on the one that grabbed my heart the most.  The one that really has me thinking.  The story of Abraham.  Here are a few things I noticed:

  • Grace was already at work when God called Abraham.
  • The call of Abraham by God was an invitation to relationship.
  • Grace does not focus on what isn’t, but what is possible.
  • The Grace filled relationship was ALL God’s idea.
  • Grace came with a 3 fold promise of blessing.
  • Grace led Abraham to a country he did not know where he was forced to depend on God for his provision.
  • Grace came through when it looked like all hope was lost.

The story of Abraham reads like a modern day soap opera. (Who needs television when God pens drama like this?)  Chosen and childless how in the world would God work out this story of Grace?

In His time.

In His way.

Every promise fulfilled.

Favor upon favor given.

So how does this speak to my heart about The Grace of God? I am thankful that with Grace – it is not the worthiness of the recipient that tips the scale.  But, the one who gives the Grace that really matters.  So I ask myself, “Do I really know the Grace giver?  Do I believe in His promises? Do I know what those promises are?  Like Abraham, would I follow Him to the end of the earth?  Would I have faith to wait when all hope seemed lost?”

He is still here.

Still inviting us to Grace.

Ready to tip the scale in our favor.

Grace is here.

The Porch :: Penny (re-post) {Please Pray}

***please read update below post.

Penny is a Pastor’s wife and Women’s Minister who is currently serving on staff and alongside her husband at Journey Christian Church in New Orleans, La.  She is the mother of a beautiful 6 year-old girl and very active 3 year-old boy.  She adores her family and considers them her most important ministry!  She has a heart for women to truly know the love of Christ.  She mentors and disciples women in cities dotted across the country and currently writes devotionals that are sent to both men & women coast to coast. I am honored that Penny has said yes to my invitation to spend some time here with us today on the 29lincolnavenue porch.

Want to REALLY know your God?  Learn His many names!

I recently completed a Bible study with the ladies of our church, and it truly transformed the way I pray and even approach my God.

Kay Arthur’s book, Lord I Want To Know You, covers the many Old Testament names of God.  I was truly amazed at how many different names my Lord has!!  We learned that the better we know His names, the better we will know how to communicate and relate to Him.

Think about it… how many names do you have?!

My friends call me Penny, but my closest friends call me Pen.  My children call me Mommy, and my husband calls me Babe.  Kids in the church call me Mrs. Penny and my daughter’s teacher calls me Mrs. Franklin.  I know how to respond, often times by the name that I am called.  Our God is much the same way!

Proverbs 18:10 tells us that, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe.”  The NAME of the Lord.  How in the world can we run to something that we don’t even know!  I think often times we don’t run to God, because we don’t really know Him!!

In this study, I spent time, really getting to know my God!  At the end of the study I asked all the ladies to take a small note card and write the names we studied with a small “take home phrase” that reminds them of that specific name.

Here’s what I wrote on my card:

Elohim – my Creator who made me fearfully & wonderfully
El Elyon – my sovereign God who handles the whys of life when I can’t
El Roi – You see me, even in my laundry room and care that I’m there
El Shaddai – You nourish me from who You are – You are All-Sufficient
Adonai – You are my Master and therefore I don’t get to say, “God, I can’t or I won’t.”
Yahweh – You are so holy that only to breathe Your name doesn’t live up to Your worthiness.  You are the Self-Existent One and I can exist in You.
Jehovah-jireh – You provided for my eternity, You’ll provide for my life!
Jehovah-rapha – You heal bitterness and turn it into something sweet
Jehovah-nissi – You are my rallying point when I get lost
Jehovah-mekoddishkem – You refresh me and sanctify me all at the same time. I don’t have to live defeated.
Jehovah-shalom – when my life seems unsettled I can have peace in You
Jehovah-sabaoth – You are my mighty Warrior and You win my battles for me
Jehovah-raah – You call me by name and lead me to beautiful places
Jehovah-tsidkenu – You give me the opportunity to make things right with You
Jehovah-shammah – You are here.  When I feel alone – You’re here!  What a view this is no matter where I am.

Update: This post originally ran on September 3, 2010. I am re-posting it today in honor of Penny.  She lost her husband last week in a tragic hunting accident. My heart is broken for her and her two sweet children. I am asking you to join me in praying for every day for the rest of January. I think using this post and the names of God would be an awesome way to pray.  If you would like to make a donation to help her family, you can do so through the Seeds of Faith Community by clicking, here.

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room (Part 1) {Giveaway}

Jesus never  forces Himself on us or into any area of our lives where we do not welcome Him.  So if we want Jesus to move in we have to make room for Him.

page 39, reading for December 14.

This little book has got me thinking about preparing my heart for Jesus as Christmas draws near. What needs to be done to make sure He is the most welcome guest? Have I given Him access to every nook and cranny of my heart?  Do I need to let some things go to make sure I have time to sit and talk with Him? What needs to be done to dust off a place for Him to sit?  What will I offer Him? Is there anything left for Him of me on His birthday?

I love Nancy’s heart felt prayer:

Jesus, we want to make room for you in our home and in our hearts, and we know that doing so may mean changing our schedules or changing our habits. Show us what needs to be moved out so there will be plenty of room for you to dwell here with us.  (P.40)

Practically speaking, this Advent devotional is filled with gentle words to help draw my heart to His.  Nancy includes a short devotion, scripture and prayer for each day.  She also lists questions to discuss with your family to lead them into meaningful conversations about Christmas. I also love that from time to time Nancy shares a Christmas carol and the story behind the song.   If you are a fan of Jesus Calling, this is a great Christmas companion to your daily reading.
